Brassaï

Today in Photo 3 we focused on one photographer, Brassaï.

He was a Hungarian photographer who started out as a reporter/writer, then started dabbling in photography, then became one of the first night photographers.

He loved his night photography. And he loved showing the relationship between a couple.

He also loved his mirrors. In many of his photographs he used the mirror to create two images, to show different views of one scene.

But one of the main things he expressed in his photography was

“There, just like that; just what I want. Now!”

He posed everything. All the images shown (except perhaps the night landscapes). The most interesting things he did was how he put himself into the environment. One series we looked at today was where he followed a man into a brothel, and it shows him meeting the girls, then even getting into the room with the girl. Of course he continues the use of mirrors in almost all of the images but being able to photograph such a private moment shows how he would almost force himself into the photographs.

But this is a photographer I need to remember. I am too shy when it comes to my photography. Yes being an editor at the Beacon I am always asking for permission but it always has a benefit to the subject, they will probably end up in the Beacon. As an artist it is a bit harder to show them how they benefit. But Brassaï liked telling them they were a part of an artistic experience. Maybe I need to do that.

But his work is worth looking at. I didn't post many of his simply because it has nudity but look into them.
